Bringing the streets of Mexico to the Heart of Nairobi - Fonda's Taqueria Soulful Journey image

We opened Fonda’s Taqueria with a simple but bold ambition: to bring the real taste of Mexico to Nairobi — not a themed version, not a watered-down copy, but the true spirit of Mexican food, hospitality, and culture.

We knew it would take more than a good taco to do that.

So we built Fonda around the idea of a fonda: the neighborhood kitchens in Mexico where food is made with heart, shared in good company, and remembered long after the plates are cleared. That’s what we’ve created here — a space full of flavor, joy, and connection. A rooftop refuge in Westlands where guests feel at home, and every dish has a story.

🍴 From Scratch, With Soul

At Fonda, we don’t take shortcuts. We hand-press our tortillas. We make our own orange liqueur. We roast, simmer, and cook our food with love. Our food is bold, layered, and made with care — the kind of care you can taste. Whether it’s tacos al pastor sliced from the trompo, birria tacos crisped on the comal, or mole negro slow-cooked in celebration of Día de los Muertos, every dish is crafted with love.

We serve the food we grew up with. The flavors that mean something. The ones that make you pause — and return.

🌮 A Table for Everyone

Fonda isn’t just for Mexican food lovers. It’s for the curious, the nostalgic, the joy-seekers and flavour-chasers. It’s for Nairobians, expats, tourists, families, and first-time taco eaters. Our guests span generations and continents, but share one thing in common — they come hungry, and they leave smiling.

Our team — the kitchen crew, bar staff, servers, hosts — is at the heart of everything we do. We laugh together. We grow together. We taste everything. And we treat everyone like part of the Fonda family.

🍹 Spirit in Every Sip

We're proud to run Nairobi’s first true mezcal bar — with a curated collection that showcases the wild, smoky magic of this ancestral spirit. We guide guests through tastings, explain the process, the agaves, the regions. Because to us, mezcal isn’t just a drink — it’s a conversation. Our cocktails, like the Prickly Sombrero and the Ahumado Seco reflect the same spirit as our food: creative, bold, rooted in tradition, made with quality ingredients and fresh juice — never shortcuts.

✨ Why We’re a Top 100 Business

Being selected as one of Africa’s Best Mexican restaurants is a huge honor — and we believe we earned it by staying true to who we are. We’re not chasing trends. We’re not trying to be everything to everyone. Instead, we focus on doing what we love:

  • Serving real food that respects culture and flavor
  • Creating a space that feels like home, filled with joy, color, and warmth
  • Building a team that leads with heart
  • Evolving with purpose, but never losing our soul

From press features in The New York Times, El Universal, and The Nation, to local love from our loyal guests, Fonda has become more than a restaurant. It’s a place people remember. A place they return to. A place they bring others to experience for themselves.

We’re not just serving tacos. We’re serving memory, meaning, and a little bit of Mexico on every plate.

Come hungry. Leave happy. Return often. That’s the Fonda way.
